What eluded Scottie Scheffler was within reach for Nelly Korda. The world number one won the 2024 Ford Championship for her third consecutive victory on the current LPGA Tour season and 11th of her career on the circuit.
This time, Nelly Korda did not suffer the stress that usually accompanies her victories and finished the Ford Championship on 20 under, two strokes ahead of runner-up Hira Naveed. However, Korda did had to wait a while in the clubhouse to find out if she had won or not, as she did not play the final round in the final group.
Nelly Korda’s performance during the Ford Championship included one eagle, 23 birdies and five bogeys. Korda was in contention for the first three days (66, 68, 69), but it was not until the fourth round that she stormed to the top, weathering the cold and rain better than her rivals to card a bogey-free 7-under 65.
After her victory at the Ford Championship, Nelly Korda was very pleased with the result. She told the LPGA Tour News Service:
“I think it was definitely one of my least stressful wins today. I played really solid golf [at the Ford Championship]. I didn’t make too many mistakes, and if I did, I just had a straightforward chip. Overall, I capitalized on the majority of my really good shots out there today and made some good putts as well. I’m very, very pleased with how I played today in the tough conditions.”
“I would say the reset that I had after Bradenton really, really helped me. I really enjoyed my time off. Spent a lot of time with my family. Went back to Prague. I enjoyed life outside of golf a little. Just disconnected. To me, that was the perfect reset going into this busy schedule.”
With her victory at the Ford Championship, Nellyt Korda joins several illustrious lists. She is the first player to win three consecutive tournaments since Ariya Jutanugarn in 2016, and the first American to do so since Nacy Lopez in 1978. She is also the first player to win three of her first four starts of the season since Lorena Ochoa in 2008 and the first to win three times before April 1 since JoAnne Carner did it in 1980.
However, Nelly Korda had little time to bask in her Ford Championship triumph. The world’s top player today left the press conference directly for a five-hour road trip to Las Vegas, accompanied by an almond croissant she bought earlier in the morning. It just so happens that Korda plays again as early as next Wednesday, April 3, in the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, held by the Shadow Creek in “Sin City”.
“Relax” is not in the dictionary of champions.
