Winning in golf is so rare that Tiger Woods’ career winning record defines the category of legend. Every golf fan knows that in his prime, Woods achieved results for which the term “dominant” is an understatement. But even knowing that, the data never cease to amaze.
At a time when Scottie Scheffler‘s consistency is astounding, it’s always nice when one of golf’s wise men brings back the real GOAT of GOATs. In this case, it was golf’s statistical expert, Lou Stagner, who gave us the craziest (and most revealing) statistic of all.
According to Stagner, Scheffler has won eight of his last 48 official starts on the PGA Tour. This streak began at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open and includes the following wins
- 2022 WM Phoenix Open
- 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard
- 2022 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play
- 2022 Masters Tournament
- 2023 WM Phoenix Open
- 2023 THE PLAYERS Championship
- 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard
- 2024 THE PLAYERS Championship
- 1999 World Golf Championships-American Express Championship
- 1999 THE TOUR Championship
- 1999 National Car Rental Golf Classic/Disney
- 1999 World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational
- 1999 PGA Championship
- 1999 Motorola Western Open
- 1999 Memorial Tournament
- 1999 Buick Invitational
- 2000 Bell Canadian Open
- 2000 World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational
- 2000 PGA Championship
- 2000 The Open Championship
- 2000 U.S. Open Championship
- 2000 Memorial Tournament
- 2000 Bay Hill Invitational
- 2000 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
- 2000 Mercedes Championships
- 2001 World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational
- 2001 Memorial Tournament
- 2001 Masters Tournament
- 2001 THE PLAYERS Championship
- 2001 Bay Hill Invitational
- 2002 World Golf Championships-American Express Championship
- 2002 Buick Open
- 2002 U.S. Open Championship
- 2002 Masters Tournament
- 2002 Bay Hill Invitational presented by Cooper Tires
- 2003 World Golf Championships-American Express Championship
- 2003 100th Western Open presented by Golf Digest
- 2003 Bay Hill Invitational presented by Cooper Tires
- 2003 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship
- 2003 Buick Invitational
- 2004 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship
In other words, Scottie Scheffler would have to win 26 of his next 52 official starts just to tie Tiger Woods‘ streak. Even more impressive, to “truly tie” Woods’ streak, Scheffler would have to add six majors to the one he already has between his 26 wins, and it wouldn’t hurt to pick up a few more titles at elevated events.
Like I said, “dominant” is an understatement for Tiger Woods in his prime.
Other crazy records of Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods has left incredible records in his golf career. His years on the PGA Tour are not over yet, but the history of his career at the top level has begun to be written, and it is full of crazy stats.
Year 2013. Tiger Woods could only play six tournaments on the PGA Tour, but he went and won four of them (that’s right, FOUR!) just like that. Of course, he did not miss one major (US Open). His other two finishes? T2 at the Masters and 5th at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship.
Woods has completed the career Grand Slam three times, but he is the only player in the modern era to have all four major trophies under his belt, although he did not achieve them in the same year. In 2000, he won the PGA Championship, the US Open and the Open Championship. The following season, he won the Masters, completing the so-called “Tiger Slam,” as no one else had ever done. As if that was not enough, he also won The Players Championship (2001) during that span.
Since the list is endless, I will add one more. Tiger Woods holds the record for most consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour with 142. The streak began in 1998 and ended in 2005, beating by 29 the previous streak held by Byron Nelson for 60 years.
