Frankie Capan III, a 24-year-old golfer and product of Florida Gulf Coast University, made headlines around the golf world by carding 11 birdies and an eagle in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship. His 13-under 58 is just the second 58 ever on the tour and is one stroke off the all-time record.
Capan’s round started with a par before four consecutive birdies on Nos. 2 through 5. He added an eagle at the par-5 ninth to make the turn at 6-under 29. On the back nine, the birdies added up, with seven in a row from 10th through 16th, before he finally made par 17th. On the closing par-5 18th, his tee shot ended up in the fairway bunker, and he was unable to card another birdie for a 57. Capan’s round is the 13th sub-60 score in Korn Ferry Tour history and the third during 2024.
Less than three months ago, Cristobal Del Solar shot a 57 in a Korn Ferry Tour tournament in Colombia, which is the best score in the history of the tour. In the same tournament, Aldricht Potgieter shot a 59.
Notably, Frankie Capan III’s 58 broke the Texas Rangers Gofl Course previous record (59) held by 2-times Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.
Frankie Capan III: “You’ve got to take advantage”
Frankie Capan III expressed excitement at surpassing Scheffler’s mark and seizing the opportunity to make history.
“When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage,” Capan said.
This is not the first under 60 score in Frankie Capan III’s career. He achieved a round of 59 in 2018, playing a High School tournament.
Frankie Capan III had a pair of top-10 finishes leading up to the Veritex Bank Championship, and is currently ranked 30th on the season-long points list. Capan III’s eyes are in the coveted PGA Tour card for the following season, which is awarded to the Top 30 of the Korn Ferry Tour’s point list after every season.
Capan III’s 58 also ties the second best score in history on the world’s major tours. At that level, only one 57 (Del Solar’s) and only seven 58s, including Frankie’s, have ever been achieved.
Playing in the same tournament is boy wonder Miles Russell, who played the first round for a score of 3 under 68. Russell, 15, has a good chance of making the cut for the second consecutive week on the Korn Ferry Tour.
