The Genesis Invitational prize pool has evolved significantly since the tournament’s inception. The first edition was played in 1926 as the Los Angeles Open and with a purse of $10,000. In 1932, the purse was reduced to $7,500 and then to $5,000 a year later.
It then fluctuated between $5,000 and $13,000 until 1948, when it reached $15,000 and began its steady rise. The purse passed the $20,000 mark in 1953, the $50,000 mark in 1963, and the $100,000 mark in 1967.
In 1987, the purse was $600,000 and two years later it passed the $1 million mark. It was $2.1 million in 1998, $5.1 million in 2006, $7 million in 2017 and $12 million in 2021. However, the purse’s biggest year-over-year growth has been in the last two seasons, when it was set at $20 million.
