Jason Day reveals he doesn’t sleep at home despite living 30 minutes from Muirfield

Golf fans might be surprised to hear that Jason Day, a 13-time PGA Tour winner, is spending the Memorial Tournament week sleeping in his RV parked in his own driveway. This unusual arrangement was suggested by his wife, Ellie, as a strategic move to help Day regain his competitive edge.

Jason Day, who used to be a top player on the PGA Tour, hasn’t been playing as well as he used to in recent years. His record at the Memorial Tournament is pretty lackluster, with just one top-10 finish and two top-25 finishes in 14 career starts.

The only time he finished in the top 10 was in 2020, when the season was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Day hasn’t been playing as well as he used to, which has led to his current world ranking outside the top 50.

Jason Day’s recent play shows that he’s facing some broader challenges on the tour. Injuries and inconsistencies have been a problem for him, preventing him from getting back to the level of performance that saw him win the 2015 PGA Championship and become the world number one.

Despite these setbacks, Jason Day remains a fan favorite and keeps showing us glimpses of his old brilliance, so there’s hope that he might be back on top soon.

Jason Day: From Home Comforts to Driveway Focus

As the Memorial Tournament unfolds at Muirfield Village, Jason Day finds himself in a peculiar situation. Despite living only a 30-minute drive from the course, Day is not enjoying the comforts of his home. Instead, he is staying in his RV, which is parked in his driveway.

This curious decision was influenced by his wife, who believes that the home environment has been too relaxing for Jason Day, leading to a lack of focus and poor performance in past tournaments.

“Thirty-minute drive, not too bad,” Day explained to Ron Green Jr. on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio. “I am staying in my bus. In my driveway, though.”

When asked for the reason behind this arrangement, Jason Day elaborated,

“My wife suggested it. In the past, I’ve had some poor results here, and she’s like, ‘I think you’re too relaxed and you’re out of structure. You need to treat it as a tournament week.’ So we have a spot where we park our bus in the driveway, and yeah, I’m staying there.”

This strategy, although unconventional, is aimed at recreating the focused environment Jason Day experiences during regular tour events when he travels and stays in his RV.

Jason Day’s decision to sleep in his RV as a means to refocus for the Memorial Tournament is a testament to his dedication and willingness to try new approaches to improve his game.

The move has sparked curiosity and amusement among fans and fellow players alike, but there is a method to the apparent madness. By maintaining the structured environment of his RV, Jason Day aims to replicate the conditions that have historically brought him success on the tour.

This experiment comes at a crucial time for Jason Day, as he seeks to break free from a cycle of disappointing results. His wife’s suggestion to treat the Memorial Tournament as a regular tour event, complete with the same routines and environment, could provide the mental shift needed to enhance his performance.

“Many sports have multiple disciplines that can accrue multiple medals. … Obviously, the individual side, I think, really proves who’s the best player on that week. … But if there’s a secondary opportunity, I think that’d be fantastic,” Day noted, reflecting his openness to trying new strategies.

The RV setup might seem eccentric, but for Jason Day, it represents a controlled, familiar environment where he can focus solely on his game. If successful, this approach could become a model for other golfers facing similar struggles.

As the Memorial Tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Jason Day and his driveway RV experiment. Will this unusual tactic lead to a resurgence in form and a strong showing at Muirfield Village? Only time will tell, but Day’s commitment to innovation and improvement is clear.

This week, his fans will be hoping that the RV holds the key to unlocking the potential that has been stifled in recent years.
