At a recent press conference during the AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews, Lexi Thompson shared some details about her future plans, revealing that she has a number of ideas to make the most of this new phase of her life.
As 2024 draws to a close, Lexi Thompson, one of the most accomplished and respected golfers in the industry, finds herself at a pivotal point in her career. After years of success on the golf course, Lexi has decided to take a break and re-evaluate her life away from the professional tour.
From traveling the world to getting involved in charitable initiatives, Lexi Thompson has been reflecting on how she wants to spend her days when she’s no longer dedicated to golf so intensely.
Lexi Thompson is plenty of ideas
Lexi Thompson provided some insights into her future plans:
“Well, I’m launching my Lexi Fitness app coming up in the next few weeks, so that’ll be up and going very soon, and then next year I want to travel. I want to be able to travel and not play golf, so to be able to sightsee and do all the touristy things. Definitely looking forward to that”
“I’ll be 30 next year, so settle down, get married and have a family. That’s my No. 1 priority”.
In regard to family and his professional pursuit of golf, he made the following remarks:
“No, it would be something I would do for fun because I think golf is such an amazing game for bringing families together, bringing people together and building those relationships. I think it’s super important.”
“So no, it’s not something I would just stop. Family wouldn’t stop that”. But professionally, I don’t plan on having a family and playing professional golf”.
Travel: A New Way to Enjoy
One of the most exciting aspects of Lexi’s plans for the future is the opportunity to travel without the pressure of constant competition. Although she has spent a significant portion of her career traveling internationally to compete, she now views travel from a different perspective. She also revealed that:
“Greece is at the top of my list or South Africa. I have a few. So many people are telling me where to go, so I have a long list”.
Lexi Thompaon is eager to embrace the opportunity to immerse herself in new cultures and landscapes.
A victory at the Home of Golf?
Given the announcement and the obvious plans for the future, Lexi Thompson reflected on an eventual win at the Home of Golf:
“It would mean the world to me, honestly. It doesn’t get much better than that. And being a major championship, it would be a dream come true. But there’s so much golf to be played, and weeks like this you just have to stay in the moment and take one shot at a time, be patient, know there will be bad breaks or some bad shots.”
“You just have to get through them with a positive attitude and keep on going. But yeah, that would be a dream of mine. But a lot of golf to be played, a lot of great players out there. So I’ll see what I can do”.
A potential return to golf?
While Lexi Thompson has stated her intention to take a leave of absence from professional golf, she has not ruled out the possibility of returning in the future. During the press conference at St. Andrews, she stated that she is still registered for several major tournaments next year, indicating that she may make occasional appearances on the professional circuit if she deems the time is right.
However, any return would be motivated by her desire to play out of pure passion, without the pressure of constantly competing. Lexi has expressed that she wants to ensure that if she does decide to compete again, she will do so because she truly enjoys it and not out of obligation.
This mindset reflects a significant change in her approach to golf, where the balance between her personal well-being and her love for the game will be paramount.
