LIV Golf Adelaide 2024 is already in the books and The Grange Golf Club saw a little bit of everything, from the largest crowd on the circuit this season (probably in its history) to a first ever LIV Golf winner. Along the way, there was no shortage of shocking events, such as the one that happened to Lucas Herbert’s caddie.
The incident occurred on the 12th hole, which is a party hole at The Grange Golf Club and therefore one of the most popular holes with fans. Local player Lucas Herbert finished his Saturday day there, and with his performance, the all-aussies team Rippers GC temporarily tied for third place. The crowd went wild and the biggest cheer of the day followed. At that moment, a fan threw a water bottle that landed directly on the head of Nick Pugh, Herbert’s caddie.

Fortunately, there were no serious consequences. Minutes later, Herbert spoke to the press and had this to say (via The Sydney Morning Herald)
“I was worried about him to begin with, but he’s good now. He’s good, and he took it really well. He could have been a lot more upset with it, but he took it really well.”
The incident has reignited the debate over fan behavior in golf, which has traditionally been different from other sports. A similar debate was sparked recently after the WM Phoenix Open on the PGA Tour.
Preliminary figures from LIV Golf indicate that approximately 90,000 fans visited The Grange Golf Club during the three-day official event.
LIV Golf Adelaide: Highlights
Brendan Steele earned his first LIV Golf victory with an 18-under score. His performance included 23 birdies and five bogeys to finish one stroke ahead of Louis Oosthuizen. This is by far Brendan Steele’s best performance on the circuit. In 18 previous tournaments, his best finish was a third place at the 2023 LIV Golf Tucson.
However, the main storyline at LIV Golf Adelaide was in the team competition, as it featured the first playoff in the history of the circuit. To add to the drama, the playoff pitted the all-Australian Ripper GC against the all-South African Stinger GC.
The playoff came down to a single hole, with the Australians, led by local idol Cameron Smith, beating the South Africans, led by Oosthuizen, by one stroke. In third place was the HyFlyers GC, led by champion Brendan Steele and captained by legend Phil Mickelson.
With this result, HyFlyers GC equaled their best historical performance at LIV Golf, as they finished third only once before, at the 2022 LIV Golf Chicago.
