The 2024 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio once again provided a stern test for the world’s best golfers. With firm and lightning-fast greens, coupled with swirling winds, only a handful of players managed to break par over the four rounds.
Scottie Scheffler made it five wins on the PGA Tour this season with his latest victory at the Memorial Tournament. Even though he shot an uncharacteristic 74 in the final round, Scheffler showed his resilience and determination.
He became the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to win five times before the U.S. Open, as well as the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win five tournaments including a major heading to the U.S. Open. Scheffler’s all-around game, along with his mental toughness, helped him secure a one-shot victory over Collin Morikawa.
This win further cements Scheffler’s place among the game’s greats. He’s now joined several elite groups of players, as he is only the second player in PGA Tour history to win THE PLAYERS, the Masters, and the Memorial Tournament in the same season (Tiger Woods, 2001). Scheffler is also de 5th player to win those three events at least once in their career (Woods, Fred Couples, Raymond Floyd and Jack Nicklaus).
Scottie Scheffler‘s 2024 season has been nothing short of remarkable. He’s already won the RBC Heritage, THE PLAYERS Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Masters, and now the Memorial Tournament. He’s made over $24 million in earnings, which is a new record for the PGA Tour.
His consistency and ability to win in various ways—whether by dominating from the front or rallying from behind—have been incredible to watch. As Scheffler heads to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, he’ll be the overwhelming favorite, carrying the weight of expectations for a player of his immense talent and accomplishments.
While Scheffler took home the Memorial Tournament’s trophy, Collin Morikawa’s performance was pretty impressive, too. The young American has been steadily getting back to his best, and his runner-up finish at the Memorial further proved he’s a contender for the U.S. Open.
Other players who did well were Adam Hadwin, who came in third, and Viktor Hovland, who tied for 15th. Hovland’s inconsistent play did raise some questions about whether he’s ready for the upcoming major championship.
