Netflix Season 2 of Full Swing is Coming March 6th, Buckle Up, Golf Fans
On March 6th, Netflix will launch season 2 of their hit golf docuseries, Full Swing.
And damn, has there ever been a time in the history of the game that has been this explosive?
Well, actually, as history tells us, there have been several. Martha Burk vs Augusta National’s no-woman membership policy. Racial inequality in both recreational and professional golf. The Tiger Woods scandal(s). Lefty and P. Reed questionable rules decisions. Brandel Chamblee. VJ spraying himself down with deer piss, or, um, something like that. The USGA and R&A’s various bans (anchoring) and rules changes. Using carts in competition. Shorts for pros in competition. And so, so much more.
Social Media, 24-Hour News Cycle, Streaming Docs, Reality TV
Here’s the thing, many of golf’s past controversies and holy shit moments have not been under the microscope or spotlight as they are today. With its positives in keeping us all connected more readily, social media has also become a tool for many of the uninformed, irate, idealogic, and often irresponsible to blast any and everyone they can through this medium.
I would hate to be someone in the spotlight in today’s world. Athletes, actors, politicians, and anyone with some semblance of fame may quickly question having it shortly after obtaining it. I feel for many of them because, after all, they are indeed human and are programmed to make mistakes and have a lapse in judgment.
Then you throw streaming services like Netflix into the mix with this new phenomenon of the real-life docuseries. That’s even more reason just to be an average Joe.
Look, I am all for the idea that some people in the spotlight deserve to be exposed if they are doing some pretty shady stuff, especially if they are in a position where they influence others, and even more so if that includes kids.
However, how media portray things, or how a producer of a Netflix series decides to script something, will ultimately tell the “story” and dictate how the world perceives it. Factual, fabricated, or somewhere in the middle, it really comes down to how it will be profitable.
I am not always so cynical, far from it, and I very often give folks the benefit of the doubt. You have to think that at least, say, 50% of the time, those on social media, in mainstream media, or who produce real-life shows on streaming services like Netflix are being as factual as possible or are trying to let the true story reign supreme. You’d hope at least.
Being Famous Often Sucks
Think about it: what would your life, yeah, you, your life, be like if it were under the same spotlight and scrutiny that stars of today are constantly under? Of course, you could argue that this comes with the territory, and you would be right. That argument, however, does not negate the fact that these individuals are just trying to get through a day just like you and I are.
In the case of a PGA TOUR or LIV Golf golfer, their job is playing golf, and although it is a game, it is their job. You don’t have fans behind the ropes at your job, watching everything you do, do you? That might be great on your best days, but it would really suck on your worst.
I promise you this; if there were a Netflix docs crew following around Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, hell, even Old Tom Morris, or if social media and a 24-hour news cycle existed back in the day, we would have some juicy shit to talk about each day at the water cooler. It makes me think that sometimes it’s better not to know what is happening in these mega-stars’ lives.
Despite Everything, I Love Me Some Full Swing on Netflix
So, even after saying my peace regarding this world of social media, 24-hour news cycles, and streaming “real-life” docuseries, I must say this…I loves me some Full Swing on Netflix! Season one gave us a glimpse into the life of a PGA TOUR and LIV Golf star. It humanized some of these guys. I mean, who doesn’t love Tony Finau after season 1?
Seeing what these guys go through in the heat of a major or even in trying to capture their first win in a regular PGA TOUR event is riveting and oh-so entertaining.
Season 2 of Full Swing will follow Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Tom Kim, Joel Dahmen, Matt Fitzpatrick, Alex Fitzpatrick, Wyndham Clark, Keegan Bradley, Justin Rose, and Ryder Cup captains Luke Donald and Zach Johnson.
Full Swing Season 2 premieres on March 6.
