The TGL season wrapped up last night with Atlanta Drive earning the first-ever championship, and Phil Mickelson spoke on the league as a whole. The season began on January 7 and ended on March 25, and it was, by many accounts, a success for golf. Apparently, Mickelson agrees.
Phil Mickelson lauds TGL after first season

TGL is a revolutionary change to golf. It has teams without individual play, something even LIV Golf doesn’t have. It has technology, and it’s restricted to one day of play instead of three or four. Phil Mickelson loves what it’s doing.
Per Golf.com, Mickelson had tons of praise for the golf league that Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy founded this year, “It would be great for golf if this were to succeed. The golf fan is the most loyal fan in sports. Buy a ticket, walk miles and see a fraction of the action. But this could allow the golf fan to buy a ticket, sit down and watch all of the action just like other sports. It could really be good for the game if it’s compelling.”
If TGL can succeed, it would, in Mickelson’s eyes, be a win for golf fans. They’d finally have a much more accessible product to watch and support, and it would feature, as it already has, some of the biggest names in the sport.
TGL reportedly had decent ratings, but nothing spectacular, all season long. Still, they performed better than expected in year one in ESPN’s eyes. Additionally, they’re already aiming to add a couple of teams and more stars from golf in the coming years.
The league is mulling over adding women like Nelly Korda or Lydia Ko from the LPGA Tour to the mix, and they are expected to eventually introduce LIV Golf members to rosters. Eventually, it could be a who’s who of golf and have all the main attractions.
If it does, then it would be difficult not to call it a raging success, and that apparently would be very good for the growth of golf, at least according to one of the most legendary players to ever do it.
