Scottie Scheffler won the 2023 Hero World Challenge with positive putting scores. He gained 0.71 strokes with the putter, averaged 1.60 putts per green in regulation and 26.50 putts per round. These were not record-breaking numbers, but they did indicate improvement in this area of his game.
However, the start of the 2024 season has brought us the same Scottie Scheffler putter in hand. In fact, it got worse, as he looked annoyed and frustrated with his performance on the greens. If it weren’t for his putting problems, the sky would be the limit for Scheffler.
Suffice it to say that despite being one of the worst putters on the circuit, Scottie Scheffler is considered the top-ranked golfer in the world by the four major world rankings, the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), The Universal Golf Ranking (TUGR), Sports Illustrated Golf Ranking (SI) and Data Golf.
This is how Scottie Scheffler’s putting has performed recently.
Shocking statistics about Scottie Scheffler’s putting
Scheffler’s putting issues are so glaring, it’s one of the storylines of the season. Some think he needs to work with a mental coach, while Rory McIlroy thinks he should try a mallet putter.
The most amazing thing about Scheffler’s putting problems is how good he is in every other area of the game. The difference is so abysmal that when you analyze his skills with the driver, irons and wedges and compare them to what he does with the putter, it seems like two completely different players.
So far in the 2024 season (through the Genesis Invitational), Scheffler is the top player on the PGA Tour in stroke gained tee to green and third in total stroke gained. He ranks in the top 10 in strokes gained off the tee and approach to the green and in the top 20 in strokes gained around the green. He is also first in greens in regulation (80.37%) and second in scoring average (67.32).
In the other hand, he ranks 128th in stroke gained putting (-0.407), 52nd in putts per round (28.87) and 134th in 3-putt avoidance (4.07%). Scheffler makes just 83.90% of his putts inside 10 feet (157th) and 80.00% of his putts from 4 feet (143rd).
The previous season was no better. In 2022-2023, Scottie Scheffler played 1584 holes and made only 603 one-putts. He needed two putts in 918 holes and three in 33 holes. Despite this, he reached number one in the world, won two official tournaments, was runner-up twice and finished in the top 10 in 13 other events.
The solution is not simple
The very fact that a player of Scheffler’s stature, with access to the best coaches and techniques, continues to have such problems with putting suggests that the solution is not simple. What cannot be doubted is that the Texan is working tirelessly to improve.
We will see if Scheffler can eventually find a way to improve the quality of his putting. Maybe this is the golf gods’ way of making sure we don’t have another Tiger Woods in the near future.
