Scottie Scheffler did the unthinkable yesterday at the 2024 Paris Olympics striking true gold with humility, class and determination. Just 2 months after an unwarranted arrest in Louisville, KY, Scheffler shocked the world with gold in hand after coming up short in the last few PGA tournaments.
Though charges have since been dropped after the misunderstanding, Scheffler was allegedly confused to be the culprit of a local pedestrian death in an extremely confusing manner. Gillis, a local police officer, was reportedly directing traffic outside of the Valhalla Golf Course entertaining the PGA Championship. Gillis claimed that following the heightened incident, in which he was attempting to re-direct traffic, Scheffler demanded to be let in to the golf course and refused to comply, dragging him to the ground and leading him to require hospital care after injury followed.
Scottie Scheffler: A Heart of Gold
However, after acquiring footage of the incident, it was very clear that Scheffler did nothing of the sort. Not only was the humble golfer clear of any evidence, but Scottie, being the professional that he is, did not even decide to pursue charges against the officer that cuffed and jailed him. Scottie’s attorney reported “The more evidence that comes out, the more it shows that Scottie was a victim here. And I think everybody sees something like this happen and realizes they’re one wrong turn … from going to jail themselves.”
Scottie, even though finishing 8th in the tournament following the traumatizing incident, even stated “I wish to put this incident behind me, and I hope (the officer) will do the same. Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard.” According to AP News, “Romines, Scheffler’s attorney, also said there were grounds for a civil lawsuit against Louisville police but Scheffler is not interested in pursuing litigation.”
Prayers for Paris
Fans were praying that Scheffler’s rough few months would not seep into his head while representing USA in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Though Scheffler was above all of the drama that could have stemmed from this horrific misunderstanding, it was not entirely clear if his head was going to be the same for these lifechanging rounds.
Starting out the event, Scheffler was falling behind the impressive statures of worldwide golf champions Fleetwood, representing Great Britain, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, Spain’s John Rham and local San Diegan Xander Schauffele. Thursday the 1st, Scottie ended the day in 6th place with a -4, Friday he maintained 10th, leading fans to wonder if there was a possible comeback at all. Come Saturday, he bit at the heels of Ireland’s McIlroy with a -10 and it really seemed like the golfer was going to have to wait until the 2028 Olympics to prove himself to the world.
The Best There Is
But, with a stroke of genius on the last chance he had, Scheffler channeled all of his might into an astounding, nail-biting last round landing an impressive and world champion winning -19 to match his heart of gold. In a situation that could have challenged any athlete to fail, Scheffler proved to the world that he is the best there is.
As Scottie’s first ever gold medal, he proves to every athlete competing in any sport, that humility, hard work and a strong mind can you the world title.
Congratulations, Scottie! You deserve this title.
