Steve Blake’s story: Calgary golfer to play in ‘his Masters’ amid battle with cancer

Steve Blake is a 56-year-old Calgary native, known for his resilience and passion for golf. This week, he is competing at the Rogers Charity Classic, held at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club in his hometown, thanks to a sponsor’s exemption. However, this appearance isn’t just about golf – it’s a story of courage, determination, and living life to the fullest in the face of adversity.

Blake’s journey to this tournament has been anything but ordinary. In September 2023, after struggling with a persistent cough that doctors initially dismissed as pneumonia, Steve Blake received life-altering news: he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

Despite the severity of his condition and an initial prognosis of 12 to 24 months, Steve Blake remained determined to continue doing what he loves most – playing golf. As he undergoes weekly targeted treatments, Blake views the opportunity to play in this tournament as a lifeline, stating,

“Golf is such a huge part of my life… I got to keep playing; I got to find a way.”

“My Masters”: Steve Blake’s Heartfelt Return to the Greens

Steve Blake’s participation in the Rogers Charity Classic is nothing short of extraordinary. Diagnosed with inoperable stage four lung cancer less than a year ago, Blake’s journey back to the golf course has been marked by immense challenges and unwavering hope.

Although his cancer remains inoperable, Blake has defied the odds by continuing to play the sport he loves. His exemption to participate in this year’s event, granted on his 56th birthday, is not just a chance to compete but a celebration of life itself.

Steve Blake has faced seven rounds of chemotherapy, each one draining but necessary to keep him in the game – both on the course and in life. After his treatments, Blake wrote a heartfelt letter to the tournament organizers, asking for a chance to play.

His request was met with open arms, and on May 27, 2024, the Rogers Charity Classic granted him an exemption. This gesture was not only a recognition of Steve Blake’s skill as one of Calgary’s top senior golfers but also a testament to the community’s support for him during his battle with cancer.

Reflecting on the exemption, Steve Blake expressed his deep gratitude:

“Being able to look forward to something like this does so much for me mentally, physically, everything. You may be handed a death sentence, but that doesn’t mean life is over. You’ve still got a lot to give, so get out there and give something.”

This tournament, for Steve Blake, is more than just another round of golf – it’s a moment to savor every swing, every breath, and every second of life. He has even gone so far as to call it “My Masters,” signifying the profound personal significance it holds for him.

Steve Blake’s connection to golf runs deep. In 2018, he qualified for the U.S. Senior Open in San Diego, showcasing his talent on a major stage. Now, as he returns to the professional circuit, his approach to the game has changed:

“This time around, it will be about embracing these special moments in life, absorbing the moments, and sharing the moments,” he shared.

Golf, for Blake, is more than just a sport – it’s a source of strength and purpose amid his cancer battle.

Steve Blake’s family has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. His wife, Kelly, and their two children, Brooklyn and Conner, have stood by his side, providing the love and encouragement he needs.

The family even had the chance to participate together in the Pro-Am event at the Rogers Charity Classic, a moment that Blake described as “a total surprise” and deeply meaningful.

His daughter Brooklyn echoed this sentiment, saying:

“It’s amazing that we all get to be a part of this experience with him. He’s so deserving of everything.”

For the Blake family, this tournament is more than just a competition – it’s a celebration of Steve’s strength, resilience, and the joy of being together.

Steve Blake’s story is one of hope and perseverance. Despite the challenges he faces with his health, he continues to live life with purpose and passion. His participation in the Rogers Charity Classic is a powerful reminder that even in the face of a terminal diagnosis, there is still so much to live for.

As Blake himself said, “I don’t feel like I’m sick. I feel like I’m just this normal guy who’s going to practice for this tournament and hopefully I’ll be around for the next one and so on and so on.”

For the Calgary community and beyond, Steve Blake’s journey serves as an inspiration. His determination to keep playing, his love for the game, and his unwavering positivity are testaments to the human spirit’s ability to rise above even the most daunting challenges.

As the Rogers Charity Classic unfolds, all eyes will be on Steve Blake – not just as a golfer, but as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of embracing life’s precious moments.
