The Masters Tournament is known for its rules for both players and spectators. Some of them date back to the founding days of Augusta National Golf Club and are designed (usually successfully) to ensure that all attendees have the best experience possible while witnessing this exclusive event.
Jason Day had the opportunity to see firsthand how seriously the Masters authorities take the matter. The Australian played one of his rounds wearing a vest with a huge “Malbon Golf Championship” sign printed on the front. It didn’t take long for officials to ask him to remove the vest.
Afterwards, Jason Day briefly explained the matter to the press. Here’s what he said:
“They asked me to take it off the vest… the busy one, and respectfully you do that, because it’s all about the tournament here, and I understand that. I respect the tournament and that’s what we’re here to do, is try and play and win the Green Jacket.”
Jason Day and Malbon Golf began a sponsorship relationship at the start of the 2024 season. Since then, the Australian has brought back outfits that are no longer very common in modern golf. Day has attended tournaments (including the Masters) wearing baggy pants and vests, among other things.
The Masters Tournament Dress Code
It’s no wonder The Masters asked Jason Day to remove his unusual attire. Both the tournament and its venue, Augusta National Golf Club, have strict dress code rules for both players and spectators.
Pros competing for the Masters title must adhere to the following wardrobe requirements:
Tops:
- Shirts or polo shirts with collars: Players must wear short-sleeved shirts or polo shirts with collars. Shirts without collars are not allowed. In addition, shirts must be tucked in with pants at all times.
- Shirt Length: Shirts must be long and buttons must be fastened.
- Layering: Golfers may opt for the “multi-layer” concept, which involves wearing several overlapping layers of lightweight clothing. This allows you to adapt to weather conditions by removing or adding layers as needed.
Bottoms:
- Long pants: Pants must be long and appropriate for golf. No camouflage, multi-pocket or denim pants are allowed.
Shoes:
- Golf shoes should have soft (not metal) toes.
Meanwhile, patrons should keep the following general rules in mind when attending The Masters:
- Weather and attire: Average temperatures in Augusta in April range from 80°F to 50°F. On sunny days, hats, cool clothing and sunscreen are recommended.
- Prohibited items: Electronic devices (including cell phones, laptops, tablets and pagers) are not allowed on the course at any time. Cameras are also prohibited on tournament days. In addition, no backpacks, bags or purses larger than 10″ x 10″ x 12″ are allowed. Golf shoes with metal spikes are also prohibited.
- Autographs: For safety reasons, there is a NO AUTOGRAPHS policy on the course. However, autograph seeking is permitted in areas adjacent to the tournament practice area and on the Par 3 course during the Par 3 Contest.
- Patron Photos: Patrons may have their picture taken free of charge at the Founders Circle daily, Monday through Sunday.
