Scottie Scheffler has been drawing the admiration of everyone in the golf world, given the superiority he has shown in the last few months. He has won four of his last five starts on the PGA Tour, including a major (The Masters), two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational and RBC Heritage), and what is known as the “fifth major” (The Players Championship).
Scottie Scheffler’s statistics and winning records on the PGA Tour are reaching legendary levels, but his impact is already reaching other levels. Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and one of the best celebrity golfers around, recently revealed an incredible statistic that has to do with his personal experience playing with Scheffler, but is still extremely revealing.
Here is part of what Tony Romo had to say about Svottie Scheffler:
“There’s like time periods where guys are like, ‘wow they’re amazing’ now they’re still great and stuff but it’s so hard to sustain over a long period of time like Tiger did, Jack did, you know, Hogan, it’s like these guys are generational.”
“I think Scottie is that guy, he does not have a weakness, and almost anybody I play with… there’s a weakness somewhere, something’s going to pop up at the wrong moment…”
“I don’t think I’ve ever played a round of golf with Scotty Sheffer and him not break 70. Ever. Which is insane” said Tony Romo. “He’s had days where he’s played poorly, and he’s one over after six, and I’m like ‘he should be seven over,’ you know. Then, the next day, he’s seven under after six.”
“It’s just he, all of a sudden, gets it back and he just, the next shot, he has the ability to autocorrect. It’s like his pitches, I mean he’s one of the best pitchers ever, his short game is incredible, you know, if he putts well, remember Tiger? If he putts well, he wins, if not, he’s in the mix.”
“I have not seen a guy hit a golf ball like this since Tiger back in the 2000s when I played with him, the way he was striking the ball the compression the trajectory the spin rate it was impressive and I was like he ain’t losing this tournament.”
“I picture it like Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus,Tiger Woods… it’s really hard to get in that company, you know what I mean, but the fact that we’re even like saying that this kid has a chance, I mean, shows you everything you want, and if you knew him, you’d love him.”
This Scottie Scheffler’s statistic is even more impressive when considering the level of competition Romo has faced on the golf course. The former football player is known for his own impressive golf game, having played in several celebrity events and being described by Tiger Woods as the best celebrity golfer he’s ever played with.
Scottie Scheffler’s crazy stats
Tony Romo may have exaggerated a bit when he put the number of rounds of golf he has played with Scottie Scheffler at 500, but the truth is that the top ranked golfer in the world is setting legendary records and more than a few fans compare his impact to that of Tiger Woods in his day.
To go no further, Scottie Scheffler has just reached 40 consecutive rounds with a score of par or better, as we reported here. That means that during 2024 he has not played a single round over par. However, he still has to string together three more tournaments with similar performance just to tie the record, as the current mark is 52 and is held by Woods.
A few weeks ago, Scottie Scheffler left his streak of consecutive rounds under par at 28, and is currently chasing another Woods’ record, the birdie average for a PGA Tour season.
