Neal Shipley, a name that has recently been making waves in the world of golf, is a 23-year-old amateur golfer from Pittsburgh. Currently a graduate student at Ohio State University, Shipley’s journey to the top has been marked by hard work and determination. Despite not receiving a single Power 5 scholarship offer as a high school recruit, Shipley has managed to make a name for himself in the competitive world of golf.
Prior to his time at Ohio State, Shipley attended James Madison University, where he graduated in 2021 after just three years. He pursued a degree in quantitative finance, complemented by minors in mathematics and economics. Not to be outdone, Shipley also earned a master’s degree in data analytics.
Shipley’s love of golf began at an early age. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School team that won the first two state titles in program history. After finishing third the year before, Shipley’s early success on the junior circuit continued when he won the 2019 Western Pennsylvania Junior Championship on the third playoff hole.
He finished second to Nick Dunlap in the 2023 US Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. That runner-up finish is the highest point of his young career, and earned him an invitation to the iconic Augusta National. He also won the 2022 Pennsylvania State Amateur at Llanerch Country Club, among other collegiate and amateur tournaments.
He nearly earned a Masters invitation by almost winning last year’s NCAA Championship. He was tied for second going into the final round, but he dropped back to T29 after a closing 79. However, he proved himself that he was ready for the next level.
