The Wyndham Championship has not failed to deliver dramatic storylines being the regular season finale to the PGA tour.
It’s always amazing when you can watch golf all day, sleep for 6 hours, wash and repeat 3 days in a row. That’s what we are looking at here with the Wyndham Championship. Play was suspended late in the second round on Saturday which means we will be looking at the potential for a cut and a champion on the same day tomorrow.
WHERE THE WYNDHAM STANDS
After 13-18 holes were completed yesterday, dawn brought many golfers finishing their rounds this morning and turning right around for 18 more.
What is on most everyone’s minds are what Cameron Kuchar said on the 18th green when he defeated his father for the first-time last week and how the emotions of his father can be bottled and sold as an anti-aging serum. His father is playing some inspired golf with back-to-back 64’s to lead the pack into a possible 36 holes on Sunday. Kuchar still needs to win the Wyndham in order to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs for the 18th straight time. He is the only player to have qualified for each of the first 17 iterations of the Playoffs.
IN THE CHASE
Trailing Kuchar are 3 non winners on the tour but hungry for a win to put them in FedEx cup position.
Max Greyserman had the most recent attempt at shooting 59 on the tour after front and back 30’s to bring him to 1 off the lead. He delivered separate runs of 5 and 4 birdies on Saturday which peaked from a 75-foot putt for birdie to bring him level with the lead at the time. Greyserman, like Kuchar, can only advance to the playoffs with a win.
Cam Young, still chasing his first win on tour, eagled both par fives at the Wyndham today on his way to a 62 (-8). His length clearly has led to an advantage at the tour’s shortest stop but could prove problematic tomorrow with 36 on the horizon.
Chad Ramey rounds off the pack of those one behind Kuchar at the Wyndham. With only one bogey in two days, he’ll need to keep that consistency in order to bring a win home to Mississippi and make the Tour playoffs.
NOTABLES AND BETS
The cut aims to be one of the lowest scores we’ve seen yet this year with 70+ golfers projected to finish at -4 or better. 20 more golfers need to finish their second round first thing in the morning in order to solidify who will play 36 holes on Sunday.
Beau Hossler, after making a run at 59 on Friday still projects to miss the playoffs without a win at the Wyndham along with Ramey (-11), Canadian Adam Svensson (-7), Charley Hoffman (-8), and Keith Mitchell (-6).
Jordan Speith among others like Nick Dunlap, Min Woo Lee, and Mark Hubbard could be in jeopardy of being supplanted from the top 70 as they all are projected to miss the cut at the Wyndham tomorrow morning.
