The Wyndham Championship returns to Sedgefield Country Club August 8th-11th in Greensboro, North Carolina, and marks the end of the regular season for the PGA tour. Post the men’s Olympic golf theatrics there aims to be plenty of drama-filled competition, and while the Woman tee off in Olympic action this weekend, the Wyndham Championship promises to have plenty of fireworks itself being golfers last chance to make the coveted top 70 FedEx playoff roster.
Post an action packed weekend in France, 20 golfers who competed for a medal will participate in the Wyndham Championship. Most notable among them are Shane Lowry (Ireland), Nick Taylor (Canada), Min Woo Lee (Australia) and Nicolai Højgaard (Denmark), among others. Altogether the field will consist of 40 of the top 70 golfers on the PGA points list so there’s plenty of opportunity for movement from those outside the top 70.
WET. HOT. AMERICAN. SUMMER!
The Wyndham Championship comes at an inopportune climate time for the Southeast. Whereas last year the viral topic was the swamp in back-to-back Wyndham Championship and St. Jude winner Lucas Glover’s pants (see the SWASS image below), it looks like the topic that might effect this tournament the most is the swampy fallout from Hurricane Debby.
Fortunately Greensboro being a little more inland the realy heavy stuff might miss causing delays at Wyndham. The Thursday/Friday forecast calls for steady rain (1-3 inches of rainfall) with 10-20 MPH gusts. Expect a sloppy start, lift clean and place conditions, and possibly delays barring the steadiness of the rain.
The weekend predicts to be the much needed calm after the storms that the Wyndham will need for great golf finish, forecast semi-sunny skies and 5-10 MPH winds.
SWEET SEVENTEEN
Sedgefield Country Club has hosted the Wyndham Championship since 2008, 16 years and running, and looks to continue it’s most recent memorable finishes. Lucas Glover’s start to his back-to-back wins last year, Tom Kim’s explosive entrance to the competitive golf scene win in 2022, and Kevin Kisner’s last win with a 6-man playoff in 2021 all promise that the trend should continue to deliver a magical Sunday in Greensboro. The course itself has seen it’s far share of scoring, 15 under to 20 under the winners have posted over the past 10 years, but as a par 70 at 7,131 yards and wet conditions early don’t be surprised if the winning score trends lower this year.
WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP BETTING CORNER
Unfortunately, this is one of those tournaments that just doesn’t have a cut betting option on any book that I’ve found so we won’t be able to throw down a nice Cut making parlay.
All Odds found are on DraftKings Sportsbook, and yes I do live in a legal Sports betting state. Please bet responsibly.
Jhonattan Vegas T30: +150
-$100 to win $150
-2024 Stats: 8/15 Cuts made, 5 T25, Last 4: Win, T20, T25, T27
Jhonny Vegas is currently 67th in FedEx Points so he needs a Cut at the very least to secure a playoff spot. He’s been playing golf like it’s 2016 which was his last PGA tour win (RBC Canadian Open). Driving Distance 10th this year and strokes gained total 39th. SG Putting at 158th is what hurt him early season, but he’s on a streak of 149 holes without a 3 putt so the putting is improving.
Thomas Detry T10: +500
-$50 to win $250
-2024 Stats: 14/18 cuts made, 1 runner-up, 4 Top 10, 7 top 25, Last 4: T9, T26, T55, T14
The Belgium shows up in big tournaments this year and at 39th in the FedEx race he has some work to do over the next 3 weeks to insure he’ll be playing in the TOUR Championship. SG Putting 8th, he can putt coming down the wire.
Aaron Rai T5: +650
-$25 to win $162.50
-2024 Stats: 17/21 Cuts made, 1 runner-up, 5 Top 10, 10 Top 25, Last 4: T75, T4, T7, T2
Playing possibly the best stretch of golf in his career before the Open, having not missed T40 or a cut since mid-April, Two Glove Rai comes into the Wyndham 53rd in FedEx points. Coming back to the US after a T75 in the Open is just what he needs, gets him back to where he established his 4th in Strokes gained total.
Sungjae Im or Billy Horschel To win: +1000
-$25 to win $250
2 of the top 3 favorites in the tournament. Sungjae hasn’t won on tour in two years, but was part of the Wyndham 6 man playoff in 2021 and has 3 top 10’s in 5 starts. This year he has missed 3 major cuts but other than those since the Masters he hasn’t finished outside the Top 12 in 8 tournaments. Individually he is +1200 to win the Wyndham.
Billy Ho has gone T4, T27, and T2 his last 3 appearances at the Wyndham. His first win since 2022 Memorial was secured in Mexico in April instead of the Masters he’s rattled off at least a T15 or better at the beginning tournament of each month this year. Individually he is +2100 to win the Wyndham.
Davis Thompson, Cam Davis, and Denny McCarthy T30: +930
-$25 to win $232.71
DT and Denny will get re-acclimated on US soil before the playoffs as they have almost all season, Scotland was not easy on them. Cam’s last 3 include a win and two top 25’s, at 41st in the points he needs to take advantage of this field to jump near the Top 30.
Webb Simpson and Harry Hall T40: +498
-$25 to win $124.50
Webb, the NC native is the all-time Wyndham earnings leader here with a win in 2011, T5 last year, and hasn’t missed the cut in 10 starts. Harry Hall is 83rd in points and needs at least a T10 at the Wyndham if he’s to make the playoffs. After the win last month you can bet he will be firing at the hip.
Total Wyndham Wagers: $250 to win $1,169.71
