For Bryson DeChambeau, men’s professional golf not only needs to change, it needs to change fast. According to the 2020 US Open champion, it is imperative that the world’s best players once again have the opportunity to play together beyond the four majors.
Bryson DeChambeau made his strong comments during the press conference ahead of the 2024 LIV Golf Miami, which begins this Friday, April 5. DeChambeau spoke emphatically about the need to move quickly to resolve the controversy between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour once and for all.
It did not go unnoticed by fans that Bryson DeChambeau used a phrase that Rory McIlroy used days earlier in an interview for Golf Digest, which we covered here. The state of men’s professional golf: “It’s not sustainable,” both stars said, one after the other.
What did Bryson DeChambeau say?
Bryson DeChambeau said that getting all the best players to play together again outside of the majors should be the number one goal today:
“There’s gotta be a way to come together. How that comes together, that’s above all of us out here. We can give input, we can have little moments where we say ‘hey we think this would be a good idea,’ or ‘that would be a good idea,’ but ultimately it’s up to the guys up top to figure it out, and figure it out quickly, because we can’t keep going this direction. It’s not sustainable, for sure, and we all respect that and recognize that and want the best for the game of golf.”
“We all love this game we want to keep playing it we want to keep competing so the only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense. It’s great to have the majors where we come together but uh we want to be competing, at least I want to be competing, every week with all the best players in the world, for sure.”
Bryson DeChambeau also appealed to the fans as the driving force behind professional golf, and that the fans want to see the best players playing against each other:
“There’s multiple ways that you can solve this problem. I think that, from a players’s perspective, it needs to come back together for the fans, number one. The fans are what drive this sport, we don’t have fans, we don’t have golf, we’re not up here entertaining. So that’s the most important thing as of right now.”
“It needs to happen fast, like it’s not a two-year thing like it needs to happen quicker, rather than later. It’s just for good, for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest.”
The topic was a recurring one during the press conferences leading up to LIV Golf Miami. Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Joaquin Niemann and others answered questions about the issue. Most of the players supported the idea that the best players should have the opportunity to play together again.
