Ludvig Aberg was the star of one of the major stories of the 2023 season. The young Swede’s precociousness stunned the golf world, with only Rose Zhang giving him some competition in grabbing the headlines reserved for the new wave of young stars.
However, since the beginning of the 2024 season, Ludvig Aberg hasn’t been in the spotlight that much . It’s fear to say that the novel of LIV Golf and its new signings, the return of Tiger Woods and Anthony Kim, the deal between the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group (SSG), and Rory Mcilroy’s newfound penchant for making explosive statements have left the media very little space for anything else. Only Scottie Scheffler has been able to compete from inside courses with all the politics currently flooding professional golf.
Careful though, this was not for lack of good performances and the best example was Ludvig Aberg. The boy has carried on as if nothing had happened and has just played his way into the top 10 of the world rankings. Since we were talking about precocity, let us note that it took Aberg only nine months and 20 professional starts to climb 814 places.
Ludvig Aberg made his professional debut in June 2023 at the RBC Canadian Open. Since then, he has played 17 official events on the PGA Tour and three on the DP World Tour. His results include two wins (the 2023 Omega European Masters and the 2023 RSM Classic), two runner-up finishes and five other top-10s. In that time, he has missed the cut only once (2023 Genesis Scottish Open).
Ludvig Aberg: Unstoppable in the world rankings
The Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is not perfect, but it is the one that officially measures player performance. In this ranking, Ludvig Aberg has had a spectacular rise.
The young Swede entered the 2023 RBC Canadian Open ranked 914th in the world. Just four weeks later, he earned the first top-10 finish of his professional career with a T4 at the John Deere Classic. That moved him up to 303rd in the OWGR. Less than two months later, Aberg broke into the top 100 after winning the DP World Tour Omega European Masters.
Returning to the PGA Tour after a successful Ryder Cup appearance, Ludvig Aberg went out determined to find his first win at this level and found it in his fourth ‘FedEx Cup Fall’ start (2023 RSM Classic). That win put him 32nd in the OWGR.
Aberg moved into the top 30 after finishing T47 at The Sentry 2024, and moved from 27th to 11th after finishing 2nd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Finally, his T25 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational moved him into the top 10 (10th) for the first time in his career.
Those who don’t put all their faith in the OWGR should know that the renowned Data Golf Ranking doesn’t think much differently. Ludvig Aberg is currently ranked 11th (as of March 11, 2024), but was already in the top 10 after his performance at Pebble Beach two weeks ago.
