Nelly Korda, the world’s top-ranked player, is a name that echoes through the corridors of women’s golf. Her journey in the LPGA Tour has been nothing short of extraordinary. Not only has she made a name for herself, but she has also contributed significantly to the growth of women’s golf on the global stage.
Korda turned professional in 2017 and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since. Her consistent performances and relentless pursuit of excellence have propelled her to the top of the world rankings. She has won numerous tournaments, including her only major title to date at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship.
As Nelly Korda prepares to tee off at the Chevron Championship, her comments in the pre-tournament press conference shed light on her mindset and her views on her position as the “best player” in women’s golf.
Nelly Korda about her streak: “I’ve learned so much about myself”
This week, Nelly Korda goes for her fifth consecutive victory at the Chevron Championship, the first of the circuit’s five majors. The stakes are high, with a second major title and a $1.2 million first-place check on the line. But even more important is the attention she’s bringing to the sport at a potential turning point in the industry, thanks to record prize money and growing interest in women’s sports.
When asked how she sees herself as the “best player” in the world on the women’s circuit, she humbly acknowledged the ups and downs that come with the sport. She pointed the importance of appreciating the good weeks and learning from the losses.
“In 2021 I went on a run, and then in 2022 and 2023 golf really humbled me,” admitted Korda. “There are ups and downs. Every athlete goes through the rollercoaster, and that is what makes the sport so great. You mature and grow so much and learn more about yourself. You never take these weeks for granted. You always try to appreciate and become very grateful for them. It makes just all the hard work so worth it. But I think I’ve learned so much about myself even through the losses.”
When the question about her current streak of four consecutive wins and if she sees herself as an inspiration for others arrived she said the following:
“Obviously with the run I’ve been on, maybe there are more eyeballs on me, but I always am very grateful for this because I know how fast something can be taken away from you. So I hope that people see who I am, my true self, and that inspires them, too.”
Nelly Korda is not just a golfer; she’s a phenomenon taking the women’s game by storm. As she seeks her fifth consecutive victory, she remains grounded, focused and ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead.
