Nelly Korda was not to be outdone by her “cousin” (on the Nike and TaylorMade side) Scottie Scheffler, winning her second tournament in as many starts. In Korda’s case, the two events were separated by seven weeks as the LPGA Tour star took time off to be with her family.

Nelly Korda’s victory came this Sunday at the Fir Hills Se Ri Pak Championship in Palos Verdes, California. It was Korda’s 10th title (1 major) in her seven-year LPGA Tour career (2024 is her eighth).

In a field that included the world’s top women’s golf stars (with the exception of Lydia Ko, Celine Boutier and Jin-young Ko), Nelly Korda was best able to deal with the strong winds that characterized the weekend. Nelly recovered from an opening round 72 to stay in contention with two consecutive rounds of 67 and finally climb to the top of the leaderboard with a final round of 69.

Of course, the drama was there when it came to Nelly Korda. She held a two-stroke lead going into the 16th hole, but bogeyed her final two and was forced into a playoff. Her rival was veteran Ryann O’Toole, who shot the best fourth round and had to wait an hour to find out the outcome of the tournament.

Nelly Korda recovered quickly from the last two holes and needed only one in sudden death to defeat O’Toole. They both found the rough from the 18th tee and managed to get within 10 feet of the hole with their second shots. But while O’Toole lipped out her birdie putt, Korda sent hers right in.

Alison Lee and illustrious veteran Jiyay Shin started the day as the leaders but could not keep pace and fell to T3 and T5 respectively. Lee missed out on her first LPGA Tour victory for the fourth time in her last five starts (2nd, T2, T2. T51, T3).

However, Alison Lee was not absent as a spectator of the sudden death definition to be the first to congratulate her colleague and friend Nelly Korda, a sign of the great sportsmanship that characterizes the LPGA Tour.

With this victory, Nelly Korda is expected to return to number one in the world rankings.
