The Master’s is not merely an annual golf competition held in Augusta, Georgia, each April. The Masters is not just one of the four Majors in professional golf. The Masters is not just something that attracts thousands and thousands of spectators from around the globe. It is much, much more than that.

The Masters is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious events in all of sports, and for good reason.

The Augusta National Golf Club course is meticulously maintained, with lush green fairways, challenging bunkers, and pristine greens that make for an unforgettable experience for fans and players.

Yet, it’s not just the course that makes the Masters so special. The tournament is steeped in a rich history that dates back to its inception in 1934. This history is not just a collection of facts but a tapestry of emotions, from the elation of Jack Nicklaus’ historic comeback win in 1986 to the tears of joy in Tiger Woods’ eyes after his emotional victory in 2019, ending a decade-long drought.

One of the most iconic and symbolic aspects of the Masters is the green jacket ceremony, a tradition that takes place on the final day of the tournament. The winner is not just presented with a green jacket but with a symbol of excellence in the sport of golf. This tradition, dating back to 1949, when members of Augusta National began wearing them as a way to identify themselves to patrons of the tournament, is a testament to the tournament’s rich heritage and values.

My Love Affair With Augusta and The Masters

One of my 12 visits to the Masters.
One of my 12 visits to the Masters.

I made my first trip to the Masters in 2010. That year, as I walked through the gate and made my way up to what I later learned was the brand-new tournament practice facility, I had literal goosebumps running up and down my arms.

That first year, I had to check many things off my list. The ridiculously cheap and remarkably delicious food was undoubtedly a must. Spending far too much time and money in the merchandise building, which, by the way, has undergone various incredible changes over recent years, is almost worth the drive up from Orlando all by itself.

Standing by The Big Oak Tree, located behind the clubhouse and next to the first tee, or as close as the ropes will let you get, has become one of my favorite pastimes at the Masters. As I do so, I look for famous players of the past, noted media, current stars, and an odd celebrity or two.

I had to watch the Honorary Starters, which now include Jack, Gary, and Tom, but at the time of my first trip, the big three, Arnie, Jack, and Gary, was an oh-so-special spectacle filled with nostalgia. We miss you, King!

Other sites were a must-see, such as the main scoreboard, the complimentary picture in front of the clubhouse, Amen Corner, the final stretch of 15, 16, 17, and 18, and so much more.

I can’t forget the Par 3 Contest! What a wonderful celebration of golf, its history, current stars, and potential future. The legends and their grandkids, the stars of today with their children, and at least two or three aces to witness. It is a unique and anticipated yearly tradition.

Since that first visit in 2010, I have attended 11 more Masters and am here in Augusta this week for my 12th.

The Masters Place In Shapping the Game and Its Future

The Drive, Chip, and Putt finals, which I have attended seven times, including this year, have added to the excitement of my yearly pilgrimage north to Augusta. Augusta National’s commitment and dedication to youth golf through this opportunity should never go unnoticed. Kids having the chance to compete at famed Augusta National has captured the imagination of people of all ages, golfers or not, and has emphasized how influential and inspirational the youth golfer is to the game at large.

The Augusta National Women’s Amateur, like Drive Chip and Putt, has become an equally important nod to the game’s diversity. Golf is a game for all, and while it has not always been seen as such by some, Augusta National and the Masters Tournament Committee have become leaders in making sure that golf is celebrated today as a game inclusive of all.

The Masters Tournament is a one-of-a-kind event that captures the magic and excitement of golf like no other. It is sports drama at its finest.

Whether you’re a die-hard golf fan or just a casual observer, there’s something about the Masters that draws you in and leaves you in awe, year after year.
