Tiger Woods’ Surprising Rank at 8 on ESPN’s Top Athletes List Feels Too Low

Tiger Woods: Underrated at 8 on ESPN’s Top 21st Century Athletes List

The beauty of sports lists is their ability to spark debates. ESPN’s recent ranking of the top professional athletes of the 21st century is no exception. How can one compare the brilliance of swimming legend Michael Phelps, the dominance of tennis icon Serena Williams, and the artistry of soccer star Lionel Messi?

    Tiger Woods’ Controversial Placement

Among the four golfers on the ESPN list, Tiger Woods naturally ranks highest. The 15-time major winner sits at eighth, just behind gymnast Simone Biles and ahead of track sensation Usain Bolt. Considering only accomplishments since 2000, Woods’ entire career isn’t evaluated, but 13 of his major wins have come since then. Despite his career tapering off since his last win at the 2019 Masters due to injuries, a car accident, and age, his ranking remains a topic of contention.

    The Top Contenders

Higher than Woods are Phelps at No. 1, Williams at No. 2, Messi at No. 3, LeBron James at fourth, football’s Tom Brady at fifth, tennis great Roger Federer at sixth, and Biles at seventh. These names are formidable, and ranking them is challenging. With Bolt at ninth and Lakers star Kobe Bryant at 10th, any of these top 10 could arguably be number one.

    Woods’ Impact on Golf

Woods could arguably be higher on this list. His career achievements, while perhaps not as numerous as Phelps’ 23 Olympic gold medals or Williams’ 23 Grand Slam titles, are significant. Woods might be more deserving of a higher ranking than James or even Biles, whose recent Olympic absence impacts her ranking. Many would place James behind Bryant in basketball.

Messi’s high placement may surprise American fans who prioritize football, basketball, and baseball (with Albert Pujols being the top baseball player at 24). Soccer fans, however, argue that Messi’s skill, ease of play, and numerous league and national titles justify his third-place ranking.Tiger Woods Grand Slam trophies

    More Than Just Golf

Woods’ on-course achievements are impressive, but his impact on golf is profound. He energized a sport that struggled to find a new star and brought in a diverse demographic. Woods’ influence goes beyond his victories, changing the perception and popularity of golf worldwide.

Perhaps the ESPN list ranks individual sports more than athletes. The Olympics’ global appeal and American success, the NBA’s popularity over golf, and Federer’s global tennis fame may justify Woods’ eighth place. Yet, golf enthusiasts feel he should be top five, if not top three.

    Other Golfers on the List

The rankings of other golfers offer insight into how golf is perceived. Phil Mickelson, second to Woods for years, is 68th, Annika Sorenstam is 89th, and Rory McIlroy is 93rd. With only four golfers on the list compared to 15 soccer players and six tennis players, the panel’s preferences are clear.Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson

    Contentment in the Top 10

Woods must be content knowing that being in the top 10 means significant achievements and a massive impact on his sport and the sports world. As for the rest of the list, it serves its purpose well—starting debates and discussions.

    ESPN’s Eclectic Rankings

ESPN’s eclectic, global list emphasizes a wide range of sports and accomplishments. Woods’ eighth-place ranking, while seemingly low to golf fans, still signifies his extraordinary contributions and success. This list not only celebrates athletic prowess but also fosters passionate debates among sports enthusiasts worldwide.

    Conclusion

Tiger Woods’ position at eighth on ESPN’s list of top 21st-century athletes may seem low to some, but it reflects his incredible journey and impact on golf. While comparisons with other sports legends are challenging, Woods’ legacy in golf and sports history remains unparalleled. The debates this list sparks underline the enduring excitement and passion for sports and their greatest stars.
