The 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans saw many predictions confirmed with the victory of one of the main favorites, the team of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. However, the Irish had to pull out all the stops to defeat Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in the playoff.

Ramey and Trainer were the clubhouse leaders throughout the afternoon after tying the event’s 18-hole foursomes record with a 9-under 63. The record was set by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in 2023 and tied by Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin in the same edition.

In the process, Ramey and Trainer also tied the Zurich Classic of New Orleans record for nine holes in foursomes format by completing the back nine in 6-under 30. That record was also set by Cantlay and Scahiuffele in 2023.

But not even a record round could prevent Ramey and Trainer from being overtaken by McIlroy and Lowry, two of the big favorites at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The Irishmen were in contention from day one and carded a four-under 68 in their fourth round to join Ramey and Trainer on 25 under.

McIlroy and Lowry didn’t have to wait long for victory, beating their rivals on the first playoff hole with a memorable chip from McIlroy that left the ball on the green for Lowry to score the winning par par with a five-foot putt.

This was McIlroy’s 25th PGA Tour victory, while for Lowry it was his third.

The 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans took place at the picturesque TPC Louisiana, being a tradition for seven consecutive years. Unlike most individual stroke-play events, this tournament features 80 teams of two players as partners.

The format is four-ball (best ball) on the first and third rounds, followed by foursomes (alternate shot) on the second and fourth rounds. It’s a thrilling blend of individual skill and collaborative strategy.
