Charley Hull, the eighth-ranked women’s golfer in the world, has recently become a viral sensation for her unconventional behavior on the golf course. At the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania, Hull was seen smoking several cigarettes while playing, providing some “John Daly-esque” moments that have gotten people talking, with fans and media alike offering a range of reactions.

Charley Hull did pretty well in the U.S. Women’s Open, finishing in the top 20 with a score of 6 over par. Her scores included 75, 72, 72, and a final round of 67, which showed her resilience and skill. Despite the attention on her smoking, Hull’s golfing skills were still on display, and she kept up her engagement with fans, signing autographs and taking pictures.

    Charley Hull’s Explanations

In a press conference following the tournament , Hull addressed the viral moment and her decision to smoke on the course.

“I was a bit stressed last year and I just kind of vaped,” Hull explained. “And I wanted to stop vaping, and even though smoking is not better than vaping, it’s just you can vape indoors all the time. I thought if I smoke, I’m going to go outside and smoke a cigarette.”

Charley Hull‘s candidness about her smoking habit has drawn a variety of reactions from fans. Some have praised her for being authentic and relatable, while others have expressed concern about the influence on young fans.

One fan commented on social media, “Charley Hull ripping a heater while signing autographs. Legend,” while another noted, “Not a great look in front of young fans tbh.”

Despite the mixed reactions, Charley Hull’s popularity has really taken off. She’s picked up over 70,000 new Instagram followers in just a week, and her interactions with fans at the tournament have only added to her growing legend.

Charley Hull’s attitude toward her public image is refreshingly straightforward.

“I’m just me, I’m not gonna change for the world,” she stated. “People either like it or lump it.”

While her smoking habit on the course may have raised eyebrows, it also showed her willingness to defy societal norms and live life on her own terms.

“All my friends always say I should have a TV show, if you think I’m a color person on the golf course, you should see what my life is like,” Hull quipped, hinting at the vibrant and unconventional aspects of her personality that extend beyond the golf course.

Charley Hull’s decision to smoke as a way to quit vaping shows how she’s managing stress and keeping her mental health in check in a unique way. Hull was diagnosed with ADHD last year and has chosen to manage her symptoms through fitness rather than medication.

“When I feel like I’m struggling, I go to the gym,” she told Sky Sports in an interview.

You can see this commitment to fitness in her social media posts, which often feature her working out and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Charley Hull’s honesty and unconventional behavior have made her a polarizing figure in the world of golf. Some people think it’s a bad idea for a professional golfer to smoke on the course, but it’s also made her more relatable to many fans.

As Hull keeps on with her career, her honesty and willingness to talk about her struggles and choices will probably keep her in the spotlight. Whether fans agree with her methods or not, it’s clear that Hull is making an impact on the sport and her growing fan base.
