What fans tackle, they conquer. It’s been almost 30 years, but all indications are that a Happy Gilmore sequel is in the works. Almost every golf fan in the world has been clamoring for the return of Gilmore and his arch-rival Shooter McGavin, so the news could not have been better received. Especially when the source is of the highest possible quality.
Christopher McDonald, who plays McGavin, was responsible for bringing the possibility of a Happy Gilmore return to the here and now. The actor recently participated in and made the following statements:
“I saw Adam [Sandler, who plays Happy] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2’. Maybe you should cut that out [of the show] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about ‘Happy Gilmore 2’. Since at least 2022, Adam Sandler has said he’d like to bring back the famous golfer, but expressing interest is not the same as having a draft script like the one McGavin (I mean, McDonald) saw. When something is already on paper, it’s serious.
The few reports available indicate that Sandler’s intention would be to put Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin on a senior tour for the new movie. However, this is far from being confirmed.
Happy Gimore was released in 1996 and has become a cult movie for golf fans. It tells the story of a former hockey player who finds love through golf, in addition to sports glory. Along the way, he faces countless challenges embodied by the “super villain” Shooter McGavin.
