Brooks Koepka isn’t in a rush to get back to PGA Tour

Fred Couples recently revealed that Brooks Koepka wanted to come back to the PGA Tour. He said that the two spoke often and revealed that the LIV Golf star, in Couples’ estimation, wanted to return and stop playing LIV Golf. Now, the five-time Major champion is speaking up on his own behalf.

Fred Couples may have taken some of the shock out of Brooks Koepka’s theoretical announcement because when given the chance, he didn’t exactly deny the allegations Couples made. Instead, he simply stated his commitment to his current situation.

“I’ve got a contract obligation out here to fulfill, and then we’ll see what happens,” Koepka said ahead of his Singapore tournament this weekend via ESPN. “I don’t know where I’m going, so I don’t know how everybody else does.”

He did directly address Couples’ comments as well. “Fred texted me after, I guess, the comments came out. I don’t know when it was, sometime last week. Yeah, everybody seems to have their own opinion, and no one asks me. I talked to Fred quite a bit, but we don’t go too much into detail about what’s going on,” he revealed.

Of course, Koepka’s future is directly tied to the PIF x PGA Tour merger. Golf may look very different once that goes through, and it may not matter which tour a player is on. If golf is truly reunified, then Koepka’s desires to return (or not) to the PGA Tour are mostly irrelevant.

The two sides have mostly both said they want to see “one tour” with the world’s best, which presumably still includes Koepka. For now, Koepka, as he alluded to, is under contract. He defected in 2022 during the first initial wave of recruits and those contracts were largely for four years. That means Koepka, barring a quick fix on the merger, cannot return until 2026, and it’s bad for business for him to agree with Couples’ thoughts.

That said, his comments didn’t add fuel to the fire or douse the flames, so this story may not be done just yet. Couples’ comments also drew ire from Koepka’s LIV tourmate Phil Mickelson, who was unhappy with Couples revealing something or lying about Koepka’s desires.
